Multicultural Event at Leapwood

Sixty first and second graders of Leapwood Avenue Elementary School received free books and a Shrek toy, donated by RIFSoCal and Macy’s Lakewood. These two organizations visited Leapwood in April to present the school with a Multicultural Lending Library. The collection includes 50 hard-bound books with themes related to African American, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American children.

Among those presenting the lending library collection and reading stories to the children in the library were Jack Chestnut, executive vice president/director, Macy’s West; Melinda Martin, director, Special Events, Macy’s West; Liz Baca Lollman, vice president/store manager of Macy’s Lakewood; and Carol Henault, executive director, Reading Is Fundamental of Southern California.

Thanks to collaboration with Macy’s, RIFSoCal has presented 11 multicultural libraries to local schools. RIFSoCal has distributed over 160,000 books to 55,000 children Greater Los Angeles during this school year.

Honored programs were recognized for their superior performance and participated in a forum to share their unique insights about producing a great RIF program. Winning criteria for the nominated programs that encourage a culture of literacy included four areas:

- Literacy and reading embedded into many aspects of programming

- RIF a cornerstone of literacy efforts

- Literacy efforts sustained year-round

- Parents and community involved in meaningful ways

RIF 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award

In honor of National Volunteer Week, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) announced the three honorees of its 10th Annual Anne Richardson RIF Volunteer of the Year Award. RIF recognized Lisa Mertz of Sunbury, PA, Lucy Her Many Horses of Rosebud, SD, and Oscar Cux of Hawthorne, CA for their donation of time, talent and energy to children’s literacy.

“RIF could not exist without the efforts of volunteers like this year’s winners,” said Carol H. Rasco, RIF’s president and CEO. “These individuals not only share RIF’s goal of fostering children’s literacy throughout the country, but they work tirelessly to ensure that we achieve that goal. We are thankful to them and to all of our volunteers for their many hours devoted to helping our youth discover the joy of reading.”

RIF volunteers have a long history of developing new and innovative ways to serve RIF, children and their respective communities. This year’s awardees continue this tradition.
