Would you like to become a RIFSoCal site? If so, take a moment to read the following guidelines. Please contact us if you have any questions.

2nd Distribution Hamasaki7.jpg
  • The Motivational Reading Program consists of special events held three times per year at RIFSoCal project sites, which include high-poverty preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, Head Start sites, and community-based organizations in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Each event brings together parents, school staff, and other volunteers to create excitement around a literacy or cultural theme, and culminates with the distribution of a free, brand-new book of choice to every child. For many of the children we serve, the books they received through the program are the first they have ever owned. Nearly 100% surveyed school principals and project site coordinators believe the program has increased students' love of reading and increase in their independent reading - which is key to children becoming strong, proficient readers.

  • Each site must designate a Site Coordinator. This person will be the contact person at your site. They will be responsible for attending the annual Orientation, choosing/picking up books at our warehouse three times a year, planning and implementing three Motivational Reading Events, and submitting a report form following each event.

  • RIF books are to be CHOSEN by children only from a wide selection of titles, with no assistance from volunteers, parents or teachers. Children absent during a book distribution will have the opportunity to select a book at another time. No teacher or classmate will choose a book for them.

  • RIF books are not to be used for any kind of school work, book reports, awards for good work or holiday gifts. We want each child to choose a book to add to their home library, a book that he or she will enjoy for its own sake, a book that will compel them to read for FUN.

  • Only RIF children will receive RIF books. No books will go to teachers, classroom collections or school libraries.

Annual Program Fee

  • The total cost of the Motivational Reading Program is $10 per child per year.  For children in grades Prek-3 and Special Education, we raise $7 and schools pay $3 per child per year; for children in grades 4-8, schools pay the program's full cost.  Special project sites pay no fee.
